Restoration of the building envelope
Versailles -
2023

A neo‑classical house dating from 1875, incorporating Louis XV‑style decorative elements, has now been divided into apartments. It has regained its original character following a careful restoration of the building envelope carried out in accordance with traditional craft standards.
All four façades were renovated, taking into account the different materials and construction techniques, after a thorough survey and fruitful consultations with the Architectes des Bâtiments de France. A limewash and a mineral paint — a traditional finish that brings out the façades’ relief — were chosen. The high plinth was remodelled with rococo stonework and repointed in lime mortar.
The craftsmen faced numerous technical challenges when renewing the zinc roof to create a roof that meets both architectural and energy‑efficiency requirements: the roof now includes thermal insulation and ventilation is cleverly provided by a double zinc astragal strip. Each brick of the chimney stacks was hand‑painted to recreate the original flamboyant trio of ochre, vermilion and dark brown. The porch and metalwork — railings and shutters — were also restored with the help of a master blacksmith and a master glazier.
